Service Above Self

Taunton Rotary, 94 not out! The Rotary Club of Taunton in December celebrates 94 years of supporting our community. Rotary itself was founded in Chicago in 1905 when four business men led by Paul Harris, an Attorney at Law, established an organisation, for men exclusively representing their trade or profession, for “mutual trading” coupled with Food, Fun and Fellowship! The name Rotary was chosen at their third meeting after the meetings had taken place on rotation at a member’s home or business premises. The Club had no rigid rules or rituals and believed in tolerance with no restrictions on politics or religion. Within three years when Paul Harris became the third President, his Christian upbringing moved the Club towards work in the Community and indeed produced the first Public Conveniences outside Chicago City Hall! Things have changed over the years and now there is NO exclusivity in trade or profession, for BOTH men and women, with a simple requirement that a member “be a person of good character who has a good reputation in their business or community and is willing to serve the community.” The Rotary motto is “Service above Self”. Taunton Rotary has both facilitated and fundraised for charity for many years and for example, has for over 20 years run an annual Cycle Ride and Golf Day. This year is no different and on November 12 we also proudly present a concert at the Temple Methodist Church which show cases local talent with the Rivertones Harmony Chorus, The New Horizon Singers and features teenage Soloists from local schools. The Charities benefitting from this event are Reminiscence Learning and Compass Disability Services. The Cycle Ride and Golf Day raised over £10,000 to be given to three local Charities, Southwest Children’s Hospice, The Beacon Centre and Somerset Sight. We hope many of you will come to our concert and thank you all for your support of our many varied events in the past.
