Rotary Club of Taunton

The Rotary Club of Taunton was formed in 1922 with the first meeting of 20 members being held in the Castle Hotel on 21st March under the President, L.-Col. G.H.Badcock.


Links with the Rotary Club of Taunton Mass. commenced in 1930 when the Club formed its International Service Committee. This link continues today with two young people from each club visiting on a biannual basis. this year is the turn of two young people visiting Taunton Mass, from the USA in July.


During WW2 a Rotary Youth Club was set up at the Y.M.C.A. with support from leaders of the local police and supported by American Military Officers stationed in the area.


In 1951 the club formed Taunton Housing Association with a lease on Wilton House in 1952 followed by Blagdon Lodge in 1963


Following years of support for local hospitals saw the formation of the Leauge of Friends of Taunton Hospitals in 1958.


In 1955 the idea of a link with Lisieux was discussed, with Lisieux Rotarians visiting Taunton in 1957. This link continues with our friends from Lisieux coming to Taunton over the weekend starting 31st May. Our guests will be home hosted by Taunton Rotarians, visit Bristol and both Clubs will take part in a formal dinner on Sunday before returniing home on Monday.


The Club mooted the idea of a Marriage Guidance Bureau in 1960 and Taunton Branch was formed in 1963. After an eight year development period the Club formed the Taunton Council forSocial Service in 1968.


In more recent times the club has been raising funds for many local charities and organisations with its annual Golf Day at Taunton Vale Golf Club which due to its closure has now moved to Oake Manor Golf Club for 2015 and the possibly unique 50/50 Charity Cycle ride held in early June each year. A murder mystery event in aid of the Leaugue of Friends helped with the purchase of a Scanner for Musgrove Hospital. Younger people were able to benefit from adventure weeks in the Wye Valley and more recently several groups were able to gain confidence in themselves from Sail Training on Tectona, sailing out of Plymouth.


In December just before Christmas the Club can be found to the sound of Festive Music at the North End of High Street giving details of the years activities and collecting for any emergencies that might arise unexpectedly

 Members have been involved with the flood relief, in several ways, including staffing the huge wharehouse at Huntworth just off the M5 junction 24.
